A Global Presence Requires a Global Mindset If a business has a great product or service; why would it not share that product or service with the world? Business leaders in the business world of today are feeling the push to go global. There has been a huge increase in the size of the global market over the past 20 years and the only alternative CEO’s have had are to get on board or get left behind (Govindarajan, 1998). A global mindset is an organization or an individual’s ability to openly become well informed about different value systems, differences in norms of behavior, and different assumptions regarding reality (Gupta, 1999). In multiple glo bal mindset definitions researched, the word â€Å"openness† was identified in many different formats. This emphasizes the importance of an organization being receptive to new cultures, different experiences, alternative practices, and most importantly the ability to adapt to change when developing a global mindset. A global mindset is one of the main ingredients in interpreting the dynamic world in which a company operates (Gupta, 1999). It is the ability to scan the world from a broad perspective to identify unexpected trends and opportunities that may be a threat or opportunity to achieve organization objectives (Kedia and Mukherji, 1999). Organizations will need to gear into a worldwide view to build internationally. An organization with global mindset considers every customer regardless of country to be as important as the customers of the home market (Govindarajan, 1998). McDonald’s – the 90th largest economy in the world – feeds about 1 percent of the world’s population a day. That’s 68 million people! It hires more than 1 million workers In the US per year and Is the world’s largest toy distributed. McDonald’s also created the Ronald McDonald House charity, which houses more than 6000 families a year in Australia alone. It is doing so in a lot of ways, including the damage it inflicts to the environment, its exploitation of foreign and domestic labor and its active impacts on traditional cultures. In this seminar, I will be analyzing different pictures that support my argument that McDonald’s Is directly destroying the global village. I think that through the Impacts It has upon the environment In which we live, McDonald’s is directly destroying the global village. As a large company, McDonald’s needs a lot of resources to fuel its growth. For example, Americans alone consume over 1 billion pounds of beef at McDonald’s every year. A cow produces 250 ml of methane per day on average. Think of how much methane is created by the sows needed to produce 1 billion pounds of beef! McDonald’s has also been accused by Greenback of feeding Its chickens with soybeans grown on farms In the Amazon rainforest’s. These soybean farms are cleared Illegally. Leading to mass deforestation In the Amazon. By doing this, McDonald’s not only encourages illegal traders in the Amazon, but also sends a worldwide message that deforestation is a viable option that can lead to contracts selling produce to McDonald’s. Encouraging excessive methane production and deforestation are Just a few of the ways in which McDonald’s helps to destroy the environment. McDonald’s also negatively affects the global village by exploiting members of the workforce. This Is done through the misuse of domestic and foreign labor. McDonald’s has always been the target of accusations that they exploit teenage labor, paying them wages that are too low to be readily lived upon. These reduced rates can be seen in this table. But most recently McDonald’s has tried to tackle these accusations head on by releasing an example budget for someone who works for the company. From the start this budget was flawed, as you can see here, the employee would have to work two Jobs to survive. This fact shows that an employee could not be sustained on a McDonald’s wage. Secondly, McDonald’s cited that health cover costs $20. This is not the case, for that amount you would be likely only to get say, ambulance cover. Thirdly, try spending only $25 a day on Just food, let alone drinks, clothes and other necessities. This budget on its own, is certain evidence that you would not be able to live on a McDonald’s wage. In extreme cases some people have had to choose between paying bills and eating food. This exploitation of cheap labor is another reason why I think McDonald’s Is contributing too diminished global village. McDonald’s Is also destroying the global village by abolishing various cultures from around the world. As seen in the picture here, McDonald’s is intervening with traditional culture, replacing traditional pastimes, like food-preparation and consumption, with an internationalists product. Often in these traditional cultures, things like food can be tied up with rituals, so food is linked to their cultural heritage. By replacing chance to pass on their cultural stories through food. However some people in other parts of the world have realized that this tragic loss of culture is occurring. For example, the people of a small town east of Melbourne called Tacoma has recently protested against there being a McDonald’s built in the town. 80 000 people thus far have signed a petition demanding that a McDonald’s franchise not be installed in their town. 1984 And Big Brother Essay 1984 shows how our lives will not be as secret as they are now. Oceania has no privacy and America is turning into that. In some ways America already is like Oceania. There are many elements in the book to compare with aspects in American society today. So in many ways George Orwell was right and maybe there soon will be a government very similar to the one in 1984. One element in the book 1984 is Big Brother. He is the ruler of Oceania. He is not one person but a name for the whole government. Big Brother could represent our government today. We may not know it but the government knows everything about us. All they need is our name and social security number and they could learn a lot about us. The government has our previous jobs, where we went to school and where we live. Big Brother is also like that in the book, probably even worse. Big Brother is even more intruding than our government today and the only way to get away with things is by thinking them. It even says on a sign, BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU 5. Another element in the book is the Thought Police. They are much different than the police in our society today. The police in American society can arrest you for things you only do while the thought police can arrest you for things you think. It was even conceivable that the Thought Police watched everybody all the time 6. If they dont see you getting involved or screaming during the two minute hate they will arrest you. The only similarity is that they both enforce the law. Otherwise they are totally different. The telescreen in the book watches almost every move you do. It invades your privacy and you have no way of getting away from it except by thinking. Any sound Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it 6. Today we have surveillance cameras, which watch you too, but these are for safety purposes so no one can rob a store or commit a crime. These cameras are not everywhere either, only in stores, banks, buildings, etc. So I dont think surveillance cameras and the telescreen are comparable. Another element is The Brotherhood, an underground network of conspirators dedicated to the overthrow of the state 15. This can be compared to God. It is the peoples hope. This is the only way the people will overthrow the government. God is our hope in society while Big Brother was their hope. Only some people knew it because others were happy with the government. But they didnt know the government was taking too much control. The Brotherhood is trying to save the people. I think there is a similarity between that and God. One last element are the Ministries. There are four ministries between which the entire apparatus of government was divided 8. This can be compared  to our government. We are divided into sections too. Ours are different and we usually have one main person in charge of those sections such as, the secretary of defense and secretary of state.
